Formerly known as Travelers Aid
Our emergency shelter for homeless families has 75 private rooms for each famies. It offers a warm, safe environment, nutritious food, and high quality childcare. All families are referred to our shelter through the City of Philadelphia’s Office of Supportive Housing.
Throughout the day we offer workshops to enrich families’ lives and prepare them for independent living. These include parenting training, computer lab, academic enrichment & refresher courses, life skills training, employment services, and money management classes. In the evenings, participation is encouraged in organized family activities. These include a book club, yoga, arts & crafts, aerobics, and family movie night. When necessary we refer families to outside agency programs.
Our professional staff of social workers also work with the families to develop individualized housing, healthcare, education, employment, and financial goals, which are regularly tracked and monitored.
We stress to our residents the imperative of saving for their future. As a result, most of the adults in our shelter regularly save some income, which we work with them to dedicate to rent, furnishings, and day-to-day living expenses when they leave the shelter.
Our Bright Spaces childcare program, located within the shelter, provides a safe and nurturing place for children from birth to age five. Children are assessed for developmental progress and problems using nationally recognized diagnostic tools.
